PLASMA AS BALL LIGHTNING
Ball lightning is a very mysterious thing. Scientists have generally held that ‘ball lightning’ was a form of plasma. The problem is, clouds of ionized gas can’t last for very long – maybe only a few seconds – before it disintegrates. And some reports have described ball lightning lasting for several minutes. In other words, scientists cannot explain ball lightning in terms of plasma. Somehow and in some unidentified way, ball lightning appears to be a pocket of electrified air that seems to keep its form for a period of time.
A possible explanation lies in a little known fact about lightning: as a stream of ions makes its way down from the clouds, research has shown that the stream drops down about 50 meters, ‘pools’ in one tiny spot for about one millionth of second, then drops down to another point about 50 meters below where it pools once again. No one knows why, and no one knows how, but for one incredibly tiny millisecond, a pool of ions is formed roughly every 50 meters! And no one knows how or why the stream then chooses the direction to leave this tiny electrical pool and head downwards again.
It was also discovered that there may be some small ‘pools’ of ions that were created but did not take part in the downward path of the stream of ions. In other words, there may be small pockets of electrified air that are formed but are not dissipated during the formation of the bolt. And what happens to these ‘pools’ or pockets of electrified air, no one knows. They may just disappear or they may float away, at least for a while.

No one knows how ball lightning forms or how it continues to exist. Ultimately,
there may be pockets of electrified air that they can feed on to keep going. And
certainly, there are literally hundreds of thousands of sources of electromagnetic
